Monterey has a history of almost getting the otters, whales and certain fish extinct from the area. Otter fur was sold and taken old-can-workers childrenover seas all the way to China. Whales were killed to make oil, and companies started over fishing for more production. Most whales, sea lions, otters, and certain types of fish were almost extinct from the area.

On the image there are men working on canning fish. There are children laborers also.

People started realizing that the animals were almost all gone. Until the community started doing volunteer work and there are many corporations that have been brought up to restore the damage and keep the environment of the town balanced. Some people even bought part of Monetrey to help restore the enviornment. Little by Little the animals started coming back. The town built a new Aquarium. Now a days the animals are protected by programs from the community and state.

“For example: the US Endangered Species Act (ESA) is Federal legislation that aims to conserve the ecosystems upon which endangered and threatened species depend. The ESA was signed into law by President Nixon in December, 1973. The ESA protects plant and animal species and is jointly administered by the US Fish & Wildlife Service and NOAA Fisheries. Its aim is twofold: to provide protection for species that are in danger of extinction and to conserve the habitats on which those species depend.”

Standford University had a meeting talking about the history of Monterey bay and how it came back to life again or as they explained it; had a rebirth. All of this was thanks to the community working as a whole wanting to better the environment for both themselves and the animals. In the video there might also be some references toward the book The Death and Life of Monterey Bay.
